Latest Parents Canada Column on Fictional Moms!

June 11, 2026

I absolutely love it when my worlds collide! While presenting at an International Matricentric Feminism conference in March organized by Dr. Andrea O’Reilly, I met fellow scholar Sarah Caré PhD who presented an exquisite paper on the Representation of Literary Mothers in Children’s Middle-Grade Fiction. I was fascinated and immediately made connections between my past life as a children’s author and my current research as a maternal scholar.

Peter’s mom from my children’s book Peter’s Poofect Pet. Illustrated by Jenny Campbell.

The result? My recent column in Parents Canada “Wicked, Weak or Weird: The Problem With Fictional Mothers.” Thank you Dr. Caré for the inspiration and to The Canadian Children’s Book Centre for your participation.
